A recent report commissioned by the Department of Transport highlighted the importance of correct wheel fixing and maintenance procedures. Research indicated that around 150-400 wheel detachment incidents occur each year of which 10 to 27 result in injury accidents and 3 to 7 in fatal accidents. The report recommended the potential mandatory use of wheel nut retention devices or movement indicators if independently shown to be effective.
